Ribbon Cutting

Kiefer’s Furniture Ribbon Ceremony

In 1969, Dick and Sharon Kiefer purchased Fleming Furniture Home from Frank and Marie Fleming. At the time Dick Kiefer was working for the Shelbyville News in advertising sales. Over the years Frank and Dick became friends, and Dick had told Frank how someday he would like to own his own business. When Frank and Marie decided to retire after nearly 28 years in business, they contacted Dick and Sharon and, as they say, the rest is history.

Dick and Sharon Kiefer bought the business from the Flemings, and renamed the downtown store Kiefer’s Fleming Furniture Home. The store continued to operate at 33 W. Broadway, offering the same name brands the Flemings had sold for years. In the early 70’s Dick and Sharon added on to the store, nearly doubling the size. At that time the name was changed to Kiefer’s Furniture Home.

Over time, Dick and Sharon continued to find new furniture brands to offer, and their selection grew. Many of the “original” brands were made right here in Indiana including: Berne Upholstery (Berne, Indiana), Serta Mattresses (Indianapolis, IN.), Tell City Chair Co. (Tell City, IN.), and Jasper Cabinet Company (Jasper, Indiana). The Kiefer’s went on to add La-Z-Boy, Simmons Beautyrest, and many more brands.

The last expansion, added in the eighties, pushed 33 W. Broadway to it’s limit–no more room for expansion. With boundaries from the public library and two churches, there was no room to grow.

In 2008, Dick and Sharon decided it was time to move from their longtime storefront on Broadway, to a new store at 520 N. Harrison. This allowed for a one level store with more room to show off their quality selection, and greater accessibility. More quality brands were added as well, such as TempurPedic and Ashley.  In 2016 Dick and Sharon decided it was time to retire, and the store in Shelbyville was closed.

In 2013 Dick and Sharon’s son Brian opened the newest Kiefer’s Furniture Home in Terre Haute, IN. Located in the former La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries store, Kiefer’s offers 11,500 square feet of quality furniture. The new location will carry La-Z-Boy, Ashley, Kincaid Solid Wood and Kincaid Hand Crafted Upholstery, Simmons Beautysleep and Simmons Beautyrest, Pulaski, John Thomas, and many other fine quality brands.
